Belated Introduction

by mavtraveler

Welcome
Welcome to the new and improved Maverick Traveler.

I’ve started this blog in March 2010 with an introductory post about how I learned a new language (Portuguese).  At that point I’ve been living in Brazil for a year, learned a ton about life, and decided to start putting out posts of things I’ve learned.  My only regret is not starting this blog in March 2009 just when I got off the plane in Rio, alas, I’ll be slowly catching up with my experiences there (as I’ve already started doing here, here and there.)

Since then, I’ve received enthusiastic emails about particular posts, but also curious emails as to what readers might expect in the feature.  I hope to address in this post what’s the purpose of the blog and what kind of content you might expect in the future.

As the title affirms, this blog is about travel, but more about living in a place for an extended amount of time.  Once you actually live in a place, you learn a whole bunch of things such as how to speak the language, where are the best places to go out, and how to pickup local women.  You cannot do that if you have 10 hours to kill on your layover flight.

Second, this blog is my outlet to share some of the things I’ve learned as a location-independent professional.  It’s amazing how your life can change once you unshackle yourself from the daily 9-5 cubicle job and start designing your life.  It’s like taking a bunch of Lego pieces and putting them where you see fit.  In my last year abroad, I probably saved a hundred little notes about different experiences that somehow changed my outlook on things.  I will be sharing them here piece by piece.

Third, I expect to have about 3 posts per week on average, with some weeks less or none at all, and some weeks a bit more.  However, rain or shine, I will shoot for 3 posts.

Thus, here’s what you can expect, in no specific order, learning a new language, ways to move to another country, ways to generate income on the Net, how to become a local, insights into the local culture, tips for safer travel, culture insights to a country,

Questions, comments and/or suggestions?  Would love to hear from you.  Head over to the contact page, and let me know, or just tweet me @mavtraveler
